Anhydrous Taphole Mud

Anhydrous taphole mud is made of corundum, silicon carbide and coke fines with resin binder for blast furnace taphole sealing. It sinters fast, plugs densely and resists molten iron and slag scouring, ideal for large and medium blast furnaces under high pressure.

Description

Anhydrous taphole mud is an unshaped refractory used to seal and protect the taphole of blast furnaces, made from refractory aggregates such as corundum, silicon carbide and coke fines bonded with resin or tar-based organic binders. Compared with conventional water-based taphole clay, anhydrous mud features a stable bond system and fast sintering, quickly forming a dense, high-strength mud core after tamping that withstands repeated scouring by molten iron and slag. It is the standard taphole material for large and medium-sized blast furnaces under high-pressure operation.

Key Features

  • Fast sintering: quickly sinters after tamping, shortening the waiting time between tapping cycles.
  • Dense, high-strength plugging: resists molten iron and slag erosion, reducing taphole enlargement and breakout risks.
  • Good plasticity: smooth gun extrusion and dense filling without mud breakage.
  • Excellent drillability: the hardened plug is easy to drill by the taphole drill, ensuring on-time tapping.
  • Good thermal shock resistance: adapts to frequent tapping–plugging–tapping temperature cycles.
  • Tailorable formulation: customized by furnace volume, top pressure, taphole depth and tapping practice.

Typical Applications

  • Sealing and maintenance of tapholes of large and medium blast furnaces.
  • Tapholes of BFs under high top pressure and intensive smelting.
  • Taphole sealing of submerged arc furnaces (ferrosilicon, ferromanganese).
  • Routine mud refilling and taphole depth maintenance.

FAQs

What is the difference between anhydrous and water-based taphole mud?

Anhydrous mud uses resin or tar binders — fast sintering, dense plugging and high strength, suitable for large and medium BFs under high pressure; water-based clay uses clay binder — lower cost and easy opening, mostly for small and medium BFs. With larger furnaces and higher top pressure, anhydrous mud has become the mainstream choice.

How is plugging quality ensured?

The key is controlling gunning pressure and mud volume to keep the mud core dense, combined with a proper tapping schedule and taphole depth maintenance. We provide supporting technical guidance for taphole operation.

How is the drillability?

The hardened anhydrous mud plug drills well with the taphole drill — it seals tightly yet opens easily, keeping the normal tapping rhythm.

Can the formulation be customized for my blast furnace?

Yes. Henan Songrui New Refractory Materials Co., Ltd. supports custom formulations by furnace volume, top pressure, taphole depth and tapping practice, with on-site technical service.
