What is the difference between castables and refractory bricks?
Castables are monolithic refractories formed by casting or gunning on site, ideal for complex shapes and integral linings with fast installation. Refractory bricks are pre-fired shaped products for regular structures requiring high erosion resistance. What service temperature ranges do castables cover?
Castables typically cover 900℃ to 1800℃: lightweight insulating 900-1400℃, high-alumina 1400-1600℃, corundum grades up to 1700-1800℃. Selection depends on the zone, atmosphere and expected service life.
What should be noted during castable installation?
Key points: strictly control water addition, use forced mixers with proper mixing time, secure formwork, vibrate to full density without over-vibration, keep the cast moist during curing, and follow the drying curve during first heat-up to avoid explosion. What are the advantages of precast blocks over cast-in-place?
Precast blocks are formed, cured and pre-fired in factory: consistent quality, high dimensional accuracy, much faster on-site installation that shortens outage time, and no site curing or baking needed. Ideal for tight outage schedules and complex furnace geometries.
Can castable formulations be customized per industry?
Yes. We have mature formulations for steel, cement, glass, non-ferrous, power, petrochemical and waste-to-energy industries, and can tailor aggregate, binder and additive systems to your specific conditions, including sample testing.
How do low-cement castables differ from conventional ones?
Low-cement castables use micro-powder technology to reduce CaO below 2.5% (ultra-low-cement ≤1%), producing less liquid phase at high temperature, giving superior hot strength, slag resistance and wear resistance for demanding zones like ladles and runners, though water control during installation is more critical.
