Winter Castable Placement: Insulation & Anti-Freeze

Low winter temperatures delay hydration and can freeze the lining. Water heating, site insulation, post-placement covering and slow heat-up decide winter success.

The biggest enemy of winter castable work is freezing. Below 5℃, cement and low-cement mixes hydrate much more slowly, and a green lining that freezes suffers structural damage as free water expands.

Four key points:

First, heat the mixing water: warm it to 30–50℃ (never pour boiling water directly on the mix); clear or preheat aggregates so the placed material stays above 10℃.

Second, insulate the work zone: build a heated shelter keeping the area above 5℃, and preheat formwork and anchors so they do not absorb heat.

Third, cover and cure immediately: right after placement, cover with insulated blankets or plastic film and cure at least 48 hours without freezing; low-cement grades hydrate slowly and need longer warm curing in winter.

Fourth, delay and slow the heat-up: a winter lining holds more free water, so slow the curve further and extend key holds to prevent steam pop-out.
