Castable Installation Essentials: Mixing, Placing & Curing

Installation quality decides lining life. From mixing water and forming to curing and stripping, seven key control points are reviewed here.

1. Surface prep: clean scale, oil and loose particles, weld anchors firmly with anti-oxidation coating, set expansion joints by design and anchor spacing per material requirements.

2. Water control: strictly follow the datasheet — less is better than more. Excess water cuts strength and raises porosity, the leading cause of early failure. Use a forced mixer: dry-mix 1–2 min, then wet-mix 3–5 min for uniformity.

3. Formwork: seal tightly to prevent slurry leaks, reserve vibrator and vent openings, and design easy stripping for shaped zones.

4. Placing & vibration: place and vibrate in layers without missing or over-vibrating; self-flow castables need no vibration but must be placed within the working time window.

5. Curing: cover and keep moist for 24–48 h after forming; take insulation measures below 5℃ to prevent early moisture loss and cracking.

6. Stripping & inspection: strip after curing, inspect for honeycomb and cracks, and repair with the same-grade material.

7. Heat-up: follow the drying curve slowly; hold at key dehydration steps such as 110℃ and 350℃ to prevent steam explosion, and confirm temperature before commissioning.
