Precast vs Cast-in-Place: Which to Choose?

Precast saves site time but needs transport and lifting; cast-in-place offers monolithic integrity but depends on weather and schedule. Decide by zone, batch and outage window.

Factory precast and cast-in-place are two routes for monolithic refractories — neither is universally better; the right call depends on service.

Choose precast when: the outage window is short (hours to a day), the zone can be split into regular blocks, volume is steady, or site formwork/curing conditions are poor. High-frequency repair zones like BF troughs, preheater cones, cyclones and burner blocks benefit from precast cutting downtime from days to hours.

Choose cast-in-place when: lining is monolithic, shapes are too complex to split, schedule allows, and the site has mixing and curing. New furnace permanent and working layers are usually cast in one pour for better integrity and gas-tightness.

Cost-wise, precast carries tooling and transport overhead per unit, but the saved downtime often outweighs it; cast-in-place costs labor and time but is more economical for large monolithic work.

Rule of thumb: precast for critical repair zones, cast-in-place for new monolithic builds. We provide block-splitting designs for complex shapes, and the two methods are often combined.
