Maintenance & Repair of Blast-Furnace Trough Castables

The BF trough wears fastest at the casthouse. Routine inspection, remaining-thickness monitoring and planned mid-repairs are key to longer campaigns and avoiding iron leaks.

Blast-furnace troughs endure continuous washing by hot metal and slag, with main trough, slag runner and swing spout as the wear hotspots. Day-to-day maintenance rests on three points:

First, inspection and temperature checks: after each tap, check residual lining thickness, castable spalling and anchor condition; use embedded or hand-held thermometry at key zones and mark any local redness or loss.

Second, thickness management: keep a residual-thickness log, measure batch by batch, and schedule a mid-repair when approaching the safety limit — never run the trough into an iron-leak event.

Third, disciplined repairs: small patches use matched repair castable; mid-repairs remove and re-cast section by section with formwork, vibration, curing and heat-up per standard; overhauls prefer precast channels and quick-change blocks to minimize on-site casting time.

For materials, use corundum-SiC low-cement castable with steel fibers in the main trough, slag-resistant grades on the slag line. We recommend trough lining grade and thickness based on taps per campaign, metal temperature and slag basicity.
