Common Issues with Low-Cement Castables and Troubleshooting

Over-watering, poor mixing and over-fast heat-up cause most site problems with low-cement castables. Walk through the checklist.

Low-cement castables perform well but are operationally sensitive; most site issues fall into three groups:

First, low strength or early cracks: in nine cases out of ten this is over-watering — low-cement mixes must follow the datasheet strictly, less is more; second causes are insufficient curing or early stripping before the bond matures.

Second, spalling or bursting after heat-up: dehydration was too fast, with inadequate holds at 110℃ and 350℃. Thick sections need longer holds scaled to thickness; never fire steeply.

Third, short working time that outpaces placement: this is inherent to low-cement grades — mix in small batches, place immediately, or switch to conventional cement-bonded grades with longer workability.

Other recurring issues: contaminated mixers with leftover material and oil, insufficient anchor density causing spalling, and aggregate/water mismatch leading to bleeding and segregation. When issues occur, keep batch and water records — we help pinpoint the cause and propose alternatives.
